High-Intensity Training, CrossFit Top Google's List of Most
Searched Exercises
Dec. 23, 2013 by Kelsey Cipolla
As the fitness industry tries to anticipate the big trends
for 2014, Google is offering a look back at the 10 most popular workouts of
2013 (based on search volume). Although queries about exercises for specific
areas have dominated the list in the past, Google users were more interested in
learning about high-intensity workouts and functional training this year,
according to the recently released list.
Beachbody's Insanity workout claimed the top spot thanks to
a high number of searches from across the country. Searches reached a high
point in March, the same month the Santa Monica, CA-based company announced it
would be offering Insanity certifications for personal trainers and group
exercise instructors at health clubs. Insanity workouts also are now available
through Xbox Fitness, which provides a library of workout videos from top
fitness trainers and brands to Xbox One users.
Not surprisingly, CrossFit was the second-most searched
workout of 2013. Although CrossFit remained a popular search term throughout
the year, many states showed little interest, according to Google. Ab workouts
were No. 3 on the list followed by bicep workouts at No. 4.
The 7-minute workout, which consists of 12 exercises that
require only body weight and a chair, ranked No. 5. The quick training routine
was featured in the May/June issue of the American College of Sports Medicine's
(ACSM) Health and Fitness Journal and appeared in The New York Times Magazine
around the same time. That likely led to the spike in popularity that the
search term experienced over the summer.
Exercises involving functional equipment also carved out a
place in the top 10. Kettlebell workouts came in at No. 6 on the list, which
also consists of shoulder workouts (No. 7), back workouts (No. 8), plank
exercises (No. 9) and TRX workouts (No. 10).
Although not all of the most-searched workouts of 2013 seem
to have staying power (we're looking at you, 7-minute workout), it's likely
that most of them are not going anywhere, since high-intensity interval
training, body weight training and functional training all were featured on
ACSM's list of 2014 fitness trends.
